John Fowler's View...

As John Fowler said it... What kind of madness is this? He is exactly right considering that he doesn't believe in the system at all. He compares the NCAA to the MLB. Although he doesn't directly compare them, he used the MLB as an example. He suggests, that the Colorado Rockies who went 22 out of 23 and swept their way to the post season. He said surely they are better than the Red Sox. But there is no way they are better because the Red Sox won the World Series and although the Rockies may have done well in the post season, they would not make it to the world series. This is an example of why the NCAA should not use the BCS standings to determine who plays in the National Championship. "Champions should be decided on the field, not by a ballot box". Greatly said by John Fowler.

Computer System Rankings

The college rankings are divided up between the coaches’ poll and the computer system. The computer system is basically done by the stats and the overall record that a team has. Some believe that this also is not fair because a computer does not know all of the little things that go on during a game. An example is that a computer cannot tell that maybe an umpire made a bad call and it changed the entire outcome of a game. This has happened many times and once again after the computer rankings come out nationwide the team that lost is upset because they get ranked lower than they really should have. This is just another example of why the NCAA should switch from the BCS, and go to a playoff system such as the NFL. All of these “little problems” such as rankings would all be resolved if they would do so.

The Coaches Poll

The coaches of the NCAA determine where a team is placed in the rankings. There are many factors that a coach will look for in a team when decided what place they should be in. The number one thing is a team's record. If a team is undefeated more than likely they will be higher than a team who has lost one or two games. This is not always the case though and this is where the conflict arises. People may think that just because a team has gone undefeated they deserve to be higher than those who have lost but many will argue that its not fair for those teams who do not play the same level competition as others. An example of this would be the Big 12 and the WAC conferences. The Big 12 has much better competition than the WAC conference because they play bigger and better teams. If the NCAA went to a playoff system like the NFL is then they wouldn't have to worry about people being upset about the rankings and standings because everyone would have a fair chance to play for the National Championship.

NCAA Conflict Within BCS Chapionship

Many of you may be familiar with college football. It is one of America’s favorite sports to watch. Although people love college football, not very many are fond of the playoff system. For those of you who are unaware of how the NCAA determines who plays in the National Championship, they go off of a point system and the quality of teams they play. I do not agree with how the NCAA is going about with the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) system because they are not giving all the teams a fair chance to play in the national championship. Basically, if you are in a strong conference with good teams and you win all your games, you’re almost guaranteed to make the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) National Championship. This gives a disadvantage to schools that are in weaker conferences with less competition. Although a team in the weaker conference may dominate, they still may not make the National Championship. Boise State is a team that I believe should make the big game because they have been dominating the west coast area for five years now. Every season they have been dominating teams and winning by a huge margin. There competition is not quite as tough as say Texas or Florida but they still manage to go undefeated. I believe they should switch to the playoff system because it gives everyone a fair chance to prove to the world they are the best team. Just like the NFL is, if you lose your season is over. The NCAA should go to a similar system such as the NFL.
